5 Keys to Great Company Culture

Small business owners and leaders, you have it rough. You have so many responsibilities, and so little time. One of the most important responsibilities you have is managing your employees and creating a company culture that encourages them to keep pushing forward. Here are 5 keys to great company culture we’ve put together for you!

1.      Foster an Environment of Open Communication

It’s inevitable that your employees will have disagreements and concerns, and it’s your job to ensure that they feel comfortable enough to share these with you and with each other rather than keeping them secret or gossiping about them. Your employees should be comfortable enough to talk about anything from what they did on the weekend to payroll concerns. Encourage discussion and honesty.

2.      Make Company Values Clear and Hire Talent that Fits those Values

Don’t just have a mission statement, let it take an active role in each decision you make. Especially when hiring new employees. It’s okay for small businesses to be choosy with the people you hire. In fact, it’s crucial to the success of your company. Hire people who fit in with your company and line up with your core values, not the other way around.

3.      Show Respect to Every Employee

Whether the janitor or the CEO, keep the attitude that every person matters. Yes, it’s cheesy. Yes, it’s cliché. But treat others how you’d like to be treated. Show respect to every member of your organization.

4.      Focus on the Positive

Whether it’s a difficult customer, situation, or even employee, do your best to focus on the positive. You and your employees can learn something from any event that occurs. Create learning experiences and help encourage discouraged workers.

5.      Be an Example

You can’t expect your employees to put in long hours if they see you being lazy at work. People will respect and embody a leader who does his job well, and it’s up to you to decide to be the example your small business needs. This is the last tip, but one of the most important. Be an example and lead your company towards a stronger culture!

When you and your employees know that you are working as a unified group towards a common goal, and you are all excited to go to work each day, you know you’re doing something right. A good team is worth much more than it’s weight in gold, and cultivating a great company culture will speed up and multiply your success as a small to medium sized business.
